Old potato bag bowl

Recycled items

  • Old potato bag made from string

Also needed

  • Glass or metal bowl (as mould)

  • Clingfilm

  • Bottles (as a prop)

  • Powertex

  • Blunt knife

  • Gesso and strong paint brush

  1. Prepare the mould by covering them with clingfilm and resting it, upside-down, over a bottle to raise it above your work surface.

  2. Place the bag in the bowl and cover it with Powertex. Make sure the whole bag is saturated, using your fingers to submerge it if necessary.

  3. Drape the bag evenly over the mould surface, gently stretching, smoothing and removing air bubbles and excess glue from it with your fingers.

  4. Leave to dry for 8 – 10 hours.

  5. Use the strong brush and paint the Gesso onto the newly made bowl. Apply 6 coats unevenly to allow the fabric to be visible at some places. Wait for each coat to dry thoroughly before you apply the next one.

  6. The bag must be completely dry before removing it from the mould, otherwise it will reshape. Gently remove it from the mould with a blunt knife.

  7. Place an electric tea-light into the inside of the newly bowl to appreciate the texture.

Caution When you work with Powertex, be sure to have running water close to hand, and protect your work surface. Wear an apron to protect your clothes.
