Stack it

You will need:

 second-hand glass pieces

resin (make sure the brand you use does not turn yellow after drying)

 ice-cream stick

used plastic cups to mix the resin

 dishwashing liquid

 dry and damp cloths

 sandpaper 100-150 grit

 pieces of Prestik

To make:

1. Collect a fair number of glass pieces from second-hand shops or flea markets. There is no blueprint to what your vase or candleholder will look like, which adds to the excitement of working on this project.

2. Wash all the pieces in warm soapy water and remove all stickers or labels. Allow the pieces to dry.

3. Now you can start designing your décor object. The base should be your heaviest object. Stack the pieces from biggest to smallest to create a tower vase or candleholder. (We used a chipped glass ashtray for the base, a section from a glass lamp base, a glass foot from a flowerpot and a sherry glass to finish off.)

4. Once you are happy with the look of your new creation, you can start the gluing process. Firstly, the areas which are to be glued together need to be sanded. The rougher the surface, the better they will stick together. Remove any sanding dust with a damp cloth.

5. Remember to read the manufacturer’s instructions prior to mixing the resin. Mix just enough to stick two pieces together at a time. After mixing the resin, allow it to rest for about 20 minutes. The resin must not be runny, but rather very sticky. Apply the sticky paste to both pieces and press them together. Hold them together for a few minutes so they can bond. Allow to dry for about 12 hours. Repeat the process with the remaining pieces until all the pieces are glued together.

6. It may seem like a time-consuming process but persevere. The result will delight you and will be admired by all who see it displayed. Stack it! You can create gorgeous new glass décor objects by simply stacking some discarded pieces.
