How to make a BASIC WOODEN PICTURE FRAME
Even though most of us do not have the professional equipment available to make a wooden frame, you can attain the same results using ordinary tools. To avoid using a router, use natural profile wood. The hardest part of making the frame is to accomplish a 45°angle. We will use a handsaw with a mitre guide, but the professionals normally use a laser guided mitre saw. I use a staple gun and wood filler to fasten the joints. To neaten our project, use a sander to remove splinters and rough edges.
Recycled items required:
• reclaimed skirting boards/roof panels/floor boards
The following items will also be required:
• handsaw
• mitre box
• staple gun
• an assistant (optional)
• wood filler
• hand sander
• white paint
• lace to display in frame
Instructions:
1. Firstly, decide on the dimensions of the picture frame. Cut the four pieces of wood to size using a handsaw. One piece of wood for each side of the frame.
2. Cut the ends of each piece of wood with at a 45°angle with a handsaw and a mitre box. I would suggest that you use some off cuts and practice using a mitre box before attempting it on your picture frame. The purpose of a mitre box is to hold the wood firmly in place, while guiding the saw to cut at the correct angle.
3. Place your cut pieces of wood flat on your work space and position them into the shape of your picture frame.
4. Make sure that the pieces are securely held in place while stapling the corners of the frame together. (This is where an assistant is very useful!) Turn the frame over and apply staples to the rear of the corners as well. If there are any gaps, use wood filler. Leave to dry overnight.
5. Before using the hand sander to smooth away any rough patches, check that the frame is completely dry.
6. The wooden frame can now either be painted, of you can wood wash it.
7. Position the lace at the back of the frame and use a staple gun once happy to fasten the lace to the frame.
8. If you are pleased with your result, attach a hanging device to the back of your frame.
